Items that DO work on the HackBook Pro

In my previous article I talked about the Sony Vaio TZ90 which I had successfully installed Mac OS X 10.4.11 onto. As it's not Apple hardware, there are some issues with missing drivers or configuration settings that need to be changed in order for certain components to function correctly with OS X.

In this article I'll detail the components that I have successfully managed to configure on my HackBook Pro

  • Graphics (at full 1366x768) resolution, with BOTH Quartz Extreme and Core Image support). Also supports screen mirroring and spanning to external display. There doesn't appear to be any way to disable internal LCD when using external display though (and I can't remember if regular MacBook's have this ability). I used the JaS Intel GMA 950 driver.
  • Networking. Built in ethernet adaptor is functioning correctly. Used the Yukon2 driver.
  • Bluetooth - bluetooth is fully functional. No additional driver required, I'm currently using my BT mouse :)
  • USB - USB is fully functional. No additional drivers required.
  • FireWire - FireWire is fully functional. No additional drivers required, I migrated data and applications from my iMac at first login with the migration assistant :)
  • Audio - Audio works only with output through the speakers, currently not detecting the built in microphone or using headphone output. I used the AzaliaAudio driver.
  • Volume up/down/mute special keys - fully working. I didn't install any driver, I guess these became available after the Audio driver was installed
  • Fingerprint reader - seems to be functional, no drivers required. It's recognised by the Hardware Inspector, and I can connect it to a Windows VM in Parallels, where it seems to work :)
  • Battery status indicator - fully functional.
  • Apple Update - I installed the EFI patch, and severa Apple Updates have installed fine :)

I'll add to this article as and when I manage to get other components working. At the moment the internal modem is untested.

    Hi, great job.

What about wlan, does it work?

    thanks for the info

    Alex

    Hi Alex,

At the moment, no. The IWIDarwin project is a project to create a driver for the built in wlan though, it is located here.

I haven’t tried the latest release for a few weeks now - I’ll try it again next weekend and report on my progress. The best I’ve managed with it to date is to get it to report the MAC address of my WLAN card, whereupon it then usually causes a kernel panic.

Hopefully it won’t be too long until it works :)

    Lee,

    I used Uphuck ’s 10.4.8 install DVD:

Graphics working full resolution, chose intel 950 at installation (no other driver required)

Audio through speakers and function keys work, chose audio support at installation (no other drivers like Azalia required)

USB, firewire, bluetooth, battery status, and Intel speed step all working, no drivers required

    Sleep NOT working

ETHERNET - NOT working, where do I find the Yukon2 driver and how would I install it????

WLAN - NOT working tried the PROSet/Wireless 4965a/g/n driver from the site you mentioned above AND a New Ethernet port IS detected. The network selector terminal program that came with the driver allows me to turn the card on or off but it does NOT have any option to connect to an AP. Any ideas?

Except for Ethernet (port and wireless), I would say this is a pretty nice replacement.

Any help on the networking stuff would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, let me be a little more specific:

Used uphucks 10.4.9 1.4i Rev 3 install DVD
With the following options checked at install:
    GMA 950 driver
    USB driver PS/2 driver
    Azalia Audio
    Power Management Bundle
    Intel SpeedStep
IOnetworkingFamily.kext (figured I needed it for the built in Ethernet)
    Ralink USB wireless
IO80211Family.kext (figured I needed it for the built in WiFi)
Network Patch (figured I needed it for the built in Ethernet)

As mentioned above, I think our systems are functionally the same, except I can’t figure out how to get built in Ethernet or Wifi working.

    Hi Lee,

I know this post is quite old and you have probably sold your hackBook by now, but could you point me to the Yukon2 driver you mentioned to get the Ethernet working? I’ve looked around the obvious places (INsanelymac, OSx86 wiki) etc. but I can’t find anything that fits that description.

There are plenty of Yukon drivers, but none seem to be for the adapter in the Vaios (88E8055 in this case).

Any hints would be much appreciated.

Got something to say?
